A brief introduction to Andrographis paniculata extract
Andrographis paniculata leaves are soaked in 95% ethanol, and the resulting ethanol-soaked liquid is decolorized with activated carbon. The concentrated liquid after the decolorized liquid is distilled to recover the ethanol is left to obtain coarse crystals. Add 15 times the amount of 95% ethanol to the coarse crystals and heat to dissolve them. The activated carbon is decolorized and served while hot. Filter and leave to recrystallize to obtain a light yellow recrystallized product, which is then washed and refined with distilled water, chloroform, and methanol to obtain the finished product of andrographolide. For crude drugs, the total yield is 1-1.5%.
Andrographolide, the ethanolic extract of Andrographis paniculata, can be obtained by cold soaking. A dose of 300 mg/kg (6/1 of LD50) of this extract was selected to study the protective effect against carbon tetrachloride-induced liver injury. The extract was found to be effective in preventing liver damage that was evident on morphological, biochemical and functional parameters. Andrographolide can prevent BHC from inducing the enzymatic activity of γ-glutamyl transpeptidase, glutathione-S-transferase and lipid peroxidation. The activity of antioxidant enzymes such as superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione peroxidase, etc. and glutathione levels will decrease under the action of BHC. The use of andrographolide shows a protective effect on superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione peroxidase, glutathione reductase activity and maintenance of glutathione levels. Lipoperoxidase activity also decreases. This result shows the antioxidant and hepatoprotective functions of Andrographis paniculata.

Reduce cold symptoms
A study measuring the effectiveness of andrographolide in reducing symptoms of the common cold compared with placebo. The effects of andrographolide were measured on days 0, 2, and 4 in a patient population of 158 adult men and women. On the 2nd day, the patient group taking andrographolide showed a reduction in some related symptoms. By the 4th day, compared with the same patient group taking the placebo, all symptoms were significantly reduced. None of the females in the rat pairings became pregnant (100%).
